DENVILLE — A former Rockaway Township councilman was critically injured in a single-vehicle accident on Route 80 West after he lost control of his vehicle and struck a center median on Tuesday night, state police said.
Robert Sternlicht, 67, was heading west near milemarker 39 in a 2006 Mazda RX-8 around 8:20 p.m. when he suddenly veered off the road and crashed into the concrete traffic barrier on the left shoulder, said Trooper Brian Polite.
The Mazda swerved back on to the highway, before striking the barrier for a second time. The vehicle came to rest in the left shoulder by the median, Polite said.
Authorities said Sternlicht was extricated from his vehicle by firefighters and taken to Morristown Memorial Hospital by the Denville First Aid Squad.
State police had originally said Sternlicht was pronounced dead at the hospital at 11:15 p.m. on Tuesday, but hospital spokesman Rob Seman said he was alive and remained in critical condition on Wednesday afternoon.
